For this week, the topic is about packaging and branding. In the presentation, the group gave us a brief introduction on what is branding and what is the differences between branded house and house of brands. Besides that, they also discussed about why how branding works in the industry. Slides were supported with pictures, examples and illustrations.

Instruction

Before we start this assignment, Mr Shamsul briefed us through the instruction. For this assignment, we need to create a packaging for a traditional Malaysia toy of our choice.

Here are the list of toys listed by Mr Shamsul:

1. Congkak
2. Gasing
3. Capteh
4. Batu Seremban
5. Mahjong
6. Wau
7. Sepak Takraw
8. Chinese Yo-Yo
9. Chinese Chess

At the end of the class, I decided to choose sepak takraw as my traditional toy. I started to do some research on how does the existing packaging looks like.

As you can see, the existing design looks pretty blend and the packaging design doesn't show as it's a sepak takraw. I then start to measure some measurements and also find some box inspiration on how my box is going to look like.

I did some research on how modern ball packaging design is going to look like and here are the results:

I felt that these are too modern and too minimal looking and it doesn't suit the whole traditional Malaysian toy looking vibe. The box looks pretty complicated too. So, I decided to do some sketches on how I want my sepak takraw packaging design is going to look like.

I decided to go with an orange themed box because orange is the color for all of the Malaysia sports jersey. The visual elements will be tiger stripes because tiger is the national animal for Malaysia and the stripes design is also used throughout the Malaysia sports jersey. With the combination of the color and stripes, the packaging design will represent Malaysia in many ways and also it will also promote the packaging while marketing in different countries.

Here is the box style that I want to go for:

The reason being is that when a person open the box, they will be presented by a sepak takraw straight away.

Here are my slides that showcase my research progress throughout this assignment:
